Speedway team Orzeł Łódź secured two wins last weekend as the riders defeated Kolejarz Opole and Polonia Piła away from home on Friday and Sunday respectively. The win in Opole saw Orzeł Łódź overall winning the 2016 2nd Polish Speedway league season.
Two matches on a single weekend are rare in Speedway, however, last weekend Orzeł Łódź made use of this rare opportunity by securing two away wins at Kolejarz Opole on Friday evening and Polonia Piła on Sunday afternoon. Lech Kędziora’s men left Opole with a 61:29 runaway victory while the 50:40 victory in Piła proved more difficult to the Łódź team.
With only one match left this season, Orzeł is sitting in top spot of the 2nd Polish Speedway league, comfortably leading the pack with 6 points ahead of second place Lokomotiv Daugavpils. Lokomotiv also qualified for the play-offs for promotion to the Ekstraliga (highest Polish Speedway), however, as the Latvian club is not eligible to race in the Polish top flight, Orzeł has already qualified for promotion.
However, things are not as easy at the Łódź club. Their new stadium will only be ready for the 2018 season. The Polish Speedway federation already indicated that they could make an exception to allow Orzeł to use their old stadium for one season (stadium does not meet Ekstraliga standards), however, there are also worries about sponsors, costs and income. At the moment, the club is running several initiatives to secure the much required funding for their Ekstraliga journey, enticing local businesses to get involved as well as asking fans for donations.
In their last match of the regular season, Orzeł Łódź will play host to Stal Rzeszów on Sunday at 13:45.
