Prepaid sim cards for mobile phones in Poland are no longer anonymous. As of Monday (25.07.) all newly purchased sim cards must be registered with the network operator.
On Monday, 25.07. a provisions of the law on anti-terrorist operations came into force, which obliges buyers of prepaid sim cards for mobile phones to submit personal information when buying the cards. Service providers will verify the identities of buyers.
According to the provision, buyers will have to submit their name, surname and social security number (PESEL) or the series and number of their identity documents. Foreigners will have to provide their passport number or residence card. Without the submission of personal details, carriers are unable to provide service.
Current users of prepaid cards have until the 01.02.2017 to register their details with their mobile phone operators. Not registering personal details will lead to suspension of service.
The Polish parliament passed the law on 10.06.2016 and it was signed by the President on 22.06.
