Piłsudski 20 Zlotych banknote voted best in world

A limited edition banknote with a portrait of the father of Polish independence, Józef Piłsudski has been voted the best banknote in the world at the international Currency Conference in Vancouver.

The winning banknote was produced by the Polish Security Printing Works (PWPW) for the National Bank of Poland (NBP), to a design by Andrzej Heidrich.

The note was made to mark the 100th anniversary of the launch of the Polish Legions, a formation that fought as part of the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I, under Piłsudski’s command.

Following World War I, on 11 November 1918, Piłsudski proclaimed Polish independence and became the key figure in Polish politics until his death in 1935.
