The plans for a metro-like transport system in Łódź are taking shape as railway company PKP PLK has selected two companies for the construction of the tunnel between Łódź Fabryczna and Kaliska railway stations. The “Metro” is expected to be ready before the EXPO 2022.
PKP PLK has selected two contractors to design and build a tunnel which is to connect the two biggest Łódź railway stations. Energopol Szczecin and a company from Minsk Mazowieckie, which specializes in the construction of roads and bridges, were initially accepted. The cost of the investment is estimated PLN 1.6 billion.
The importance of this investment for Łódź and for the possible organization of the Expo 2022 was stressed by the director of the Project Management Department at the city hall, Robert Kolczyński. In case Łódź will be selected to host the world exhibition, the expected number of visitors is estimated at 8 million people, most of which would be transported to the Expo area by rail.
According to Marcin Dyguda from the Municipal Investment Board, a 7 km tunnel will run from Łódź Fabryczna station to Łódź Kaliska with underground stations being planned at the intersection of Zielona / Zachodni and Kościuszki streets and at Manufaktura shopping center.
