Lodz marks 70th anniversary of liberation from the Nazis

At noon on January 19, the 70th anniversary ceremony of the assassination of the then Nazi police prison inmates, was held at a branch of the Museum of Independence in Lodz in Radogoszcz.


The event was attended by representatives and members of veterans’ organizations, city and state authorities, as well as representatives of the government. About 1,500 people died in the flames at the “Radegast” prison the day before the arrival of the Red Army in Lodz on January 19th, 1945. Only 30 prisoners survived the inferno.

The prison mainly held inmates convicted of “Crimes against the third Reich”, illegal food trading, transfers from German forced labour camps as well as people from random street roundups.
