On Thursday Legia Warsaw welcomes Ajax Amsterdam to the Pepsi Arena for the 2nd leg of the 1/16 Europa League finals. A penalty imposed by European football governing body UEFA will see the game being played in an empty stadium. However, Legia supporters submitted a requested to Warsaw city council to organize a public gathering (up to 3 thousand. people) in front of the stadium.
- We have received a request from a private individual, who plans to hold a public gathering outside the Legia stadium – says the director of the Office of Security and Crisis Management Ewa Gawor. – This is an initiative by supporters. We found out about it on Monday – says Bogdan Kuzio, responsible for the security at Legia.
- The application was received on time. If the organizer does not cancel it, the gathering will take place. We are estimating a crowd of between one thousand to three thousand people – says Gawor. – Of course we assume the upper limit, namely because the space in front of the stadium can hold up to three thousand people. Everything will take place under the supervision of the police. City council will also dedicate two people to closely work with the organizer – she adds.
Similar gatherings took place when Legia played with Trabzonspor in the last round of the Europa League. The organizers hope that once again Legia fans will have a reason to celebrate, even if the game itself will be played behind closed doors.
Kick off against Ajax is on Thursday at 19:00. In the first match in Amsterdam the Polish champions were defeated by 0:1.
