The popular carpooling website Blablacar has introduced fees for users purchasing seats for selected journeys. The fees were introduced in Poland on Monday. The minimum fee is set at 3 PLN, however, charges increase depending on journey value. For example, for a a journey of 120 PLN, Blablacar charges 20 PLN.
Blablacar’s website has approx. 1.5 million registered users in Poland who, until now, were able to make savings when planning their journeys, either within Poland or abroad. Often, Blablacar would present a cheaper alternative than rail, bus or air travel. However, with the new charges in place, this is about to change.
The new minimum charge is 3 PLN for journey priced up to 15 PLN. For journeys costing, for example, 46 – 50 PLN, the charge for users will be 9 PLN and for journeys with the value of up to 100 PLN, Blablacar charges 18 PLN.
For more expensive journeys, i.e. journeys with a value higher than 120 PLN, the website will charge users an average of 20% of the “tickets” value. Drivers who register their journeys on Blablacar will not feel any difference. In a statement, Blablacar confirmed that it does not intend to charge drivers.
The change was only introduced yesterday (07.03.), however, has already stirred heated discussions on social media. Particularly commuters, using Blablacar’s service to commute to work and back home, have raised concerns over the charges and the financial impact on their budget.
