A goal from veteran left wing Adam Wisniewski with one minute and 10 seconds left secured Poland a crucial win in the race for the eighth-finals.
Almost the entire 60 minutes were on equal level. Poland answered a 5:1 Russian lead quickly and equalized at 6; from that moment on it was a battle for every centimetre.
Poland took the lead for the first time at 17:16, but it wasn’t long before Russia returned to the driver’s seat. But the Poles managed to not only hang on but pull level again after being three goals down. At the end Wiesniewski flew in from the left wing to decide the game.
Andrzej Rojewski led the Poles with six goals while Daniil Shiskarev netted seven for Russia.
