Thousands gather in Warsaw to defend Constitutional Tribunal

Thousands gathered in the Polish capital Warsaw and other cities across the country on Saturday (12.03.16) to protest the government’s decision not to publish a recent key ruling by the Polish Constitutional Tribunal.

The protests were organised by the Committee for the Defence of Democracy (KOD) and held under the slogan “bring back constitutional order”. The demonstrations were sparked by the government’s recent decision not to publish a key ruling by the Constitutional Tribunal.

– We have been talking about freedom and democracy for almost four months,- said Mateusz Kijowski, KOD leader, at the demonstration in Warsaw.

Warsaw’s city hall estimated that 50,000 demonstrators took part in the protest while police mentioned a figure of approx. 15,000. Protests were also held in the cities of Wrocław, Poznań, Gdańsk and Lublin.
